E Be Gone!

For £350,000 you can buy a delightful piece of software called eProvision Day One that really takes all the stress out of laying people off. You still have to do that messy face-to-face "you R out of here" bit, but then you just press a button and all sorts of lovely things happen - simultaneously and at once. The employee's e-mail is shut down, their payroll account closed, credit cards cancelled, parking privileges revoked, telephone extension locked.

In case they have a brain full of cement and still haven't got the message, they can't access any computer files, their building passes don't work, their name is deleted from any password or company account and, as a final touch, tech support get an e-mail telling them to collect their laptop and mobile phone - whoosh, they effectively don't exist! The founder of the software company involved points out that this minimises the risk posed by laid off employees as "companies have a lot of horror stories about former employees".

Do they really? Companies who are so caring that they buy packages like this have problems with ex-employees? Get away!
